💛 Because Family Is What We’re About

At Our Time to Shine, family isn’t just part of our story—it’s the heart of everything we do.

🛡️ Our Commitment to Rights, Inclusion & Communication

At Our Time to Shine, we believe that every participant deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and clarity. When meeting new participants and their guardians or caregivers, we take the time to understand any legal rights and responsibilities as governed by the Disability Discrimination Act 2006, and we ensure that all communication is delivered in a way that is clear, accessible, and easily understood.

🧠 Understanding Human Rights

We implement a participant-focused approach by educating and empowering individuals around their basic human rights, including:

• ⚖️ The right to equality

• 🚫 The right to freedom from discrimination

• 🔓 The right to life, liberty, and personal security

• 🛑 The right to freedom from slavery

• 🙅‍♂️ The right to freedom from torture and degrading treatment

Participants are actively encouraged and included in all decision-making, ensuring their voice is heard and respected at every stage.

🗣️ Inclusive Communication Practices

We recognize that every individual has unique communication needs. Whether due to learning difficulties, language barriers, or other challenges, we are committed to making information easy to understand and free from confusion or frustration.

To support this, we may implement:

• 🧏 Sign language support personnel

• 🌐 Professional interpreters

• 🗣️ Advocates (e.g., ADA – Aged and Disability Advocates)

• 📄 Simplified documentation and visual tools tailored to individual needs

Our goal is to foster an environment where every participant feels safe, informed, and empowered—because true support begins with understanding.

🤝 Supporting Connection, Culture & Quality of Life

At Our Time to Shine, we believe that true support goes beyond daily care—it’s about nurturing relationships, respecting cultural identity, and enhancing life experiences.

By providing clear, accessible services, we ensure that participants, guardians/caregivers, and our team share a mutual understanding of roles, responsibilities, and expectations. This clarity helps build trust and strengthens the foundation of our participant-focused approach.

🌏 Respecting Culture & Identity

We take time to understand each participant’s cultural and religious background, allowing us to:

• Explore relevant groups, activities, or organisations that align with their interests

• Offer information and assistance in accessing these opportunities

• Integrate these experiences into the participant’s personal goals to improve overall wellbeing

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Encouraging Social Connection

We actively promote close contact with friends and family to reduce social isolation and foster meaningful relationships. Our support includes:

• 💻 Setting up and teaching technology (e.g. Skype, Zoom, social media) for virtual connection

• 🚗 Transport to social catch-ups at shops, cafés, or other meeting places

• 🍰 Assistance with preparation for social events—helping with baking, cooking, cleaning, and setup

• 💒 Support during ceremonies such as weddings, funerals, or other significant life events

We believe that every participant deserves to feel connected, valued, and supported—not just in care, but in life.
